Importance of Sanitization

Pools & spas are extremely vulnerable to illness causing bacteria or other contaminants introduced into the water by bathers and spa users. Chlorine based sanitizers are strong, effective disinfectants. They kill harmful bacteria, aids in algae control and help keep the pool clean and clear. These sanitizers also leave beneficial chlorine residual in the water that continually destroys new bacteria entering the pool, protecting swimmers from potentially harmful contaminants and therefore should be a critical part of any pool care program. Using a chlorinated sanitizer allows bathers to enjoy the benefits of a healthy pool and spa environment.

Chlorinating sticks consists of a form of stabilized chlorine known as trichloro-s-triazinetrione (trichloroisocyanuric acid), also known as “trichlor”. Trichloroisocyanuric acid is an excellent, highly concentrated source of available chlorine and is primarily used as a disinfectant and sanitizer in pool water treatment. The product is not readily soluble in water and therefore is particularly suited for continuous dosing. Trichlor reacts with water to sequentially release three molecules of hypochlorous acid, a very effective biocide that does the real sanitizing work.

APPLICATION Chlorinating sticks

␣ Using a suitable test kit, adjust and maintain pH in the range of 7.2-7.8, use suitable agents if needed, to increase or lower pH.

␣ For maximum effectiveness, it is recommended that the pool be stabilized with 40-60 ppm cyanuric acid to reduce chlorine loss in sunlit pools.

␣ Place one skimmer stick per 10,000 gallons of pool water every week into suitable feeder or directly into a stick skimmer basket. Chlorinating sticks introduce chlorine and additional cyanuric acid into the pool to assure the stabilizing effect.

␣ A free available chlorine level of 1.0-1.5 ppm should be maintained. Check pool frequently with a test kit and maintain residual chlorine level between 1.0 and 1.5 ppm and pH of 7.2-7.8.
