Importance of Sanitization

Pools & spas are extremely vulnerable to illness causing bacteria or other contaminants introduced into the water by bathers and spa users. Chlorine based sanitizers are strong, effective disinfectants. They kill harmful bacteria, aid in algae control and help keep the pool clean and clear. These sanitizers also leave beneficial chlorine residual in the water that continually destroys new bacteria entering the pool, protecting swimmers from potentially harmful contaminants and therefore should be a critical part of any pool care program. Using a chlorinated sanitizer allows bathers to enjoy the benefits of a healthy pool and spa environment.

Chlorinating tablets consists of a tableted form of stabilized chlorine known as trichloro-s-triazinetrione (trichloroisocyanuric acid), also known as “trichlor”. Trichloroisocyanuric acid is an excellent, highly concentrated source of available chlorine and is primarily used as a disinfectant and sanitizer in pool water treatment. The product is not readily soluble in water and therefore is particularly suited for continuous dosing. Trichlor reacts with water to sequentially release three molecules of hypochlorous acid, a very effective biocide that does the real sanitizing work.

APPLICATION

␣ For new pools, first stabilize the pool with recommended amount of cyanuric acid as per dosage chart on product. Balance pool water to recommended ranges of total alkalinity and calcium hardness according to directions on product labels.

␣ Initial Treatment – Chlorinate pool with 23 ounces of chlorinating granules (dichlor 63%) per 10,000 gallons to obtain a chlorine residual of 1.0 to 2.0 ppm. Adjust and maintain pH in the range of 7.2 to 7.8. Dispense tablets in a floating or stationery feeding device or in pool skimmer.

Maintenance dosage

␣ Use one chlorinating 3” tablet (or sixteen chlorinating 1” tablets) for daily chlorination, extra tablets may be added if needed to maintain free chlorine level in the 1.0 to 3.0 ppm range as determined by a suitable test kit.

␣ For pools with visible algae, add one to two 3” (or sixteen to thirty-two 1”) tablets to the skimmer for each 10,000 gallons of water.

␣ After super chlorinating or treating for algae with elevated chlorine levels, allow the free available chlorine level to drop below 3.0 ppm before swimming is permitted.
